NET-FU

Online, Automatic Logo Generation

Preview Effect/Description

What is Net-Fu?

Have you ever gotten the sinking feeling that a million web-monkeys banging at their keyboards might--given sufficient time--produce a web page with more artistic appeal than you could? If so, your web pages are probably crying out for graphical inspiration! Net-Fu is here to help. Net-Fu is an online system for automagically generating cool logos that are specifically tailored to your tastes. All you have to do is provide some basic information about your dream-logo, and Net-Fu hits the ground running. In the next 10 seconds, Net-Fu talks to servers all the way in Berkeley CA, which in turn slave over your request until your logo is just right. Finally, your finished logo is returned to you for immediate use. Before you dive into the deep waters of automatic logo generation, here's a more detailed look at what's going on behind the scenes...
  • Net-Fu is a Java applet which talks to a Script-Fu server, which in turn talks to a GIMP process which runs on a machine in the XCF.
  • What is the GIMP? The GNU Image Manipulation Program is free software for creating and retouching images.
  • What is Script-Fu? Script-Fu is a plug-in for use with GIMP that runs a Scheme interpreter for executing scripts--typically a list of commands that a graphic designer would ordinarily do by hand.
  • Everything mentioned here (including source code for all programs) is free. If you have interest in programming and image manipulation, feel free to use the fruits of our labors. Grab source here.

Alien Glow

Spice up your web page by giving it the patented X-Files feel. How can you miss with eerily glowing logos?

Textured Logos

Generate a logo to give your page that "earthy" feel you've been looking for. Uses the GNU Image Manipulation Program's (GIMP's) Mosaic filter to turn the background into a tiled piece of artwork!

Blended Logos

Do you own a slammed down, purple Chevrolet Impala? Enter your girlfriend's name, and paint the resulting logo onto your rear window.

Chrome (Take 1)

This is the first, primitive (though still cool) version of the chrome effect. (See below for a more elite version!)

Chrome (Take 2)

Ah, chrome that looks like chrome. Are you a trucker looking for snazzy graphics to place on your mud-flaps? Look no further. This effect was taken from the Photoshop WOW! Book and turned into an elite Script-Fu script.

Crystal/Gel

Another stunning example of the breath-taking procedures detailed in the Photoshop WOW! Book . This script actually displaces the underlying image based on the text you specify!

Glowing HOT!!!

Remember in Raiders of the Lost Ark when the Nazi scumbag left the poker in the coals until it glowed white-hot? Well, this script operates on a similar principle, only it heats up text, not a poker. <Photoshop WOW! Book>

Neon Lights

Do you like sleazy places? Capture that essence-of-Las-Vegas for your very own! Click this preview to degrade the already questionable character of your web-page.

Logos with Highlights/Shadows

This one's a no-brainer script, but it has a nice, clean look. For your basic logo needs, this is where you should start.

Nova Starscape

Reach for the stars with these futuristic logos. Your web page will go where no web page has gone before. Or something...

Carve-It!

Carve text into or out-of any damn background you like. Watch as Net-Fu takes precision masonry or woodcarving to extreme limits!

Starburst

This effect was inspired by Xach Beane's GIMP News web page. It's a cool variation on the Starscape motif.

Cool Metal

This effect was inspired by Rob Malda's GIMP web page. The output is superb, especially at large font sizes. Don't miss this one!
