United States - New Jersey Transit Rail operations

New Jersey Transit is the local transit authority in the state of New Jersey. It has a busy train network with some trains connecting New Jersey with New York. Part of the network is electrified and part is diesel driven.
New Jersey Transit locomotive 4130 is a class GP40FH-2 locomotive, formerly Conrail GP40 no.3058. After this picture was taken it was again rebuilt as NJT MP20GP no.1001.

New Jersey Transit no. 4408 leading a long distance passenger train into Summit station NJ. 4408 is an electric locomotive of the type ALP-44. As those who are familiar with European trains can probably recognise, it is a close relative of the Austrian classes 1043 and 1044, and is based on a Swedish design by Asea. Asea Brown Boweri ABB built these in 1989-97 and NJT bought 32 of them. This one was delivered in 1990. In 2012 New Jersey Transit took all of its ALP-44 machines out of use and stored them for potential further use.

New Jersey Transit ALP-44 no. 4424. is from the last series designated as ALP-44M, M for microprocessor controlled. It was delivered by ABB in 1996. It is a triple electric system locomotive capable of running under 12,5 kV 25Hz AC, 12,5 kV 60Hz AC and 25kV 60Hz AC. Top speed is 201 km/h (125 mph). In addition to New Jersey Transit, also SEPTA of Philadelphia bought these machines.

New Jersey Transit ALP-44 no. 4406 is from the first series designated as ALP-44O, O for original. It clearly looks like a Swedish locomotive.

New Jersey Transit locomotive 4521 is of the new generation of locomotives which has superceded the ALP-44s shown above. This model was designed by what then was ADtranz, then Bombardier of Canada, even later Alstom. It is of the type Bombardier ALP-45 DP. It is a locomotive with just one single driver's cab and it is an electro-diesel dual mode machine which runs on electric power where a catenary is available, but which can continue with diesel power on non-electrified tracks. New Jersey Transit has 26 of these modern machines. They are in use since 2015.

New Jersey Transit light rail services

New Jersey Transit operates also tram-like light rails in addition to full scale trains. This tram-train is from the Newark light rail system. It is a roughly 7 km long line connecting Newark Penn station to north Newark and Bloomfield. The tram-trains are built by Kinki Sharyo Co. Ltd. of Japan. They operate on 750 V DC and can reach a top speed of 80 km/h. It is a double-articulated vehicle with three sections and a driver's cab at both ends.
