Amtrak is the closest US equivalent to European federal state railways. According to Wikipedia Amtrak owns 2,142 railway cars and 425 locomotives. It was formed only in 1971.
One of the few long distance passenger traffic trains in the west, this is the Amtrak "Surfliner" service no.777 stopping at the Anaheim station in southern California south of Los Angeles, bound for San Louis Obispo. At the front of the train there is just a simple (and ugly) double decker steering wagon and at the back the pushing locomotive was this Amtrak 459, which is an EMD type F59PHI built in 1998. For further pictures of the same locomotive in 2007, see below. Picture at Anaheim station (a.k.a. Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center) 25.10.2016 by Ilkka Siissalo.

Amtrak's locomotive 459, an EMD made model F59PHI is ready to lead the exotic looking express train "Mt. Olympus" towards Oregon from Seattle WA. Those exotic coaches are a fixed set of Talgo wagons, made by the Spanish company Talgo. It is a fixed set, with coaches shorter than normal. They have just one axle right between each coach. This is the so called Northwest Talgo train of the Amtrak Cascades train route, which runs from Vancouver, Canada via Seattle and Portland to Eugene, Oregon. Another Amtrak Cascades train with the Talgo wagon set "Mt. Baker International", running between Vancouver and Seattle. The locomotive no. 90340 just looks like a locomotive, it's just a steering cab coach. It is indeed an old type F40PH locomotive, but now used only as a cab car without any engine. There is always an EMD F59PHI or a GE Genesis at the other end of the train. Picture from Seattle King street station 25.10.2007 by Ilkka Siissalo.

Same station, exactly the same steering cab coach and the same rake of Talgo wagons, but 10 years later in February 2017. Now the train was about to leave as the "Empire builder" service towards the east. Picture at the Seattle King street station 13.2.2017 by Ilkka Siissalo.

The other end of the same "Empire builder" service had a massive diesel, the Amtrak no.167, a GE Genesis P42DC. Picture at the Seattle King street station 13.2.2017 by Ilkka Siissalo.

Sorry about the poor quality of the picture caused by both the speed of the passing train but also rain water on the lens. This was an Amtrak Cascades train from Seattle towards Vancouver Canada, led by Amtrak locomotives 51 and 56. They are of the General Electric Genesis series type P42DC machines with a modest 3170 kW of power and a top speed of 177 km/h. Picture from Seattle Elliott avenue 25.10.2007 by Ilkka Siissalo.
