The main railway station of Yerevan. Picture 18.6.2017 by Timo Varshukov.

In 2007 the government of the Republic of Armenia conducted a tendering process for the modernization and operation of Armenian Railways. Russian Railways RZD qualified as the only bidder and established South Caucasus Railway CJSC as a wholly owned subsidiary to run the former Armenian Railways. South Caucasus Railway inherited ca. 2000 freight cars, 58 passenger coaches, 85 locomotives and 30 electric trains. There is now an investment programme in place, allocating USD 225 million for the modernisation of infrastructures and rolling stock. CJSC has now 845 km of 1520 mm track. Electric system is 3kV DC.

A local commuter train in Yerevan. It looks like it would be a modified class ER2 from Riga, Latvia.

No photographers on the narrow platform as the train is arriving ! In many places in former Soviet Union it still is not OK at all to take train pictures.

A local commuter train has just arrived from Sevan to the Almast station. The train is an old ER2, but still with the rounded old head style of the ER1's. These trains were built in Riga, Latvia in the early 1960s.

An old ER2 with the rounded fronts as they used to be in the early 1960s. This train was built in Riga, but these days this kind of trains can only be seen in railway museums in the Baltic states. The brown locomotive at the back is probably a VL10.

In 2011 the metro trains of Yerevan were still unmodified. The orange one seen above seems to have at least received a new drivers' cab, but this one is still the original Soviet train.
