NORDUnet, 6 February 1992 P. Villemoes NORDUnet Organization 1992 -------------------------- This note describes the internal organization of NORDUnet. The main areas of work are the following: Operations The day to day operations of the NORDUnet backbone is performed by the KTH NORDUnet/SUNET operations staff under contract with NORDUnet. Bj|rn Eriksen, the NORDUnet operations manager, is in charge. The first line operations is backed up by service managers, one for each service provided to the national networks. They are the following: LAN Backbone - Johnny Eriksson Internet IP - Anders Hillbo EARN - Eric Thomas DECnet - Ingrid Dahl-Jensen X.25 - Olav Kvittem The service managers or their institution are under contract with NORDUnet. A service manager is expected to coordinate with the national networks' service managers for planning and operating the service. Technical coordination The purpose of the technical coordination is to assure a sound technical foundation for the development of NORDUnet. The tasks include specialized technical studies, advice on the development of the NORDUnet technology, supervision of development projects, and coordination between the NORDUnet service managers. The coordinator will also maintain close contact to other networking specialist groups, in particular NETF. In 1991 Harri Salminen took up these duties under contract with VTKK for a half time occupation, and he will continue this in 1992. The decision procedure for technical questions (e.g. harmonization, standards, protocol usage) is based on proposals from technical groups. A proposal will be submitted to a wider audience for comment and may then become a draft recommendation. The NORDUnet Board has the final decision to adopt a recommendation and transform it into a NORDUnet recommendation. The board will, in general, base its decision on advice from the technical groups. Administration The NORDUnet administration comprises the following main tasks: Accounting and budgeting, paper mail, contracts, meeting preparation, etc. The NORDUnet secretariat located at UNI-C performs the administration. The operating rules for the secretariat, in particular the economic administration, are the same as those valid for UNI-C as a Danish "Statsvirksomhed". This will continue until NORDUnet becomes a legal entity. The practical work and economic administration may then still be performed by UNI-C. Peter Villemoes, assisted by Nete Pind, is in charge of the administration. The clerical administration work is not expected to exceed half time in total. Projects Projects are carried out under contract. Until August 1992 Alf Hansen will carry out the Mail Inspector function under NORDUnet contract with SINTEF. External relations NORDUnet is represented in RIPE, HEP HTC, HEP DECnet, EARN technical groups, IXI, which all have regular meetings. NORDUnet must also be represented in other activities inside and outside the Nordic countries, such as NETF, RARE, Ebone 92, and possibly American bodies. These liaison activities are shared between the relevant service managers, the executive and specially appointed representatives. Organisational structure ------------------------ The NORDUnet board is the deciding body of NORDUnet. The day to day management of NORDUnet is carried out by an executive. In 1992 the executive consists of Peter Villemoes, Bj|rn Eriksen, Harri Salminen, and Bernhard Stockman. The executive reports to the board. The board delegates some of its decision power to the executive, in particular for administrative routines and travel allocation.
