The new service will not begin until late 1995 when prices have fallen and consumers can more easily get the set top decoders. Successfull launch for Astra 1D Less than four weeks after Flight 68, Arianespace has launched ASTRA 1D, the fourth direct broadcasting satellite operated by the Luxembourg-based Societe Europeenne des Satellites. The launch took place at 0037 UTC early on Tuesday morning and was broadcast live on RTL 4 in Europe. The separation of the satellite from the launcher took place 20 minutes after launch. Commenting on the seventh launch of the year, Charles Bigot, Arianespace Chairman and CEO, said: "This evening's successful launch is a clear demonstration of our company's ability to maintain a high launch rate in response to our customers' needs. We appreciate SES's continued confidence, for having chosen Ariane for four consecutive launches and are proud to have been selected once again to launch their next satellite." An ARIANE 42P launch vehicle will be used to launch the PAS-3 telecommunications satellite into geostationary transfer orbit for the American firm PanAmSat, L.P. Following Flight 69, as of November 1, 1994, Arianespace's backlog now stands at 37 satellites to be launched. BBC gears up for European News launch BBC Worldwide Television is now busy in preparations for the launch of it's new European News and Information Channel. The closing date for many of the job applications associated with the channel was 1 November. The stations lease on Eutelsat 2 F1 begun on the same day, indicating that Tuesday was to have been the launch date as we reported earlier this month. The start has now been pushed back and the BBC is using the transponder to send it's Arabic language news channel to Orbit TV in Italy. This was using the Telecom 1C satellite in the weeks prior to 1 November. Money woes delay satellite launch Doug Clarke, RFE/RL Inc The Russian military Space Forces had to postpone the launch of a weather satellite from the Baikonur cosmodrome because the factory supplying the special fuel refused to ship it before receiving payment. Interfax said on 27 October that the problem had been resolved and the fuel was now on its way but the launch--originally scheduled for 26 October--would be delayed by at least a week. Canada plans DTH service next year DTH Canada, a Canadian consortium, have announced a new DTH service aimed at French speaking viewers that will launch next year. Nick Text started on November 5th. - German TV channel ARD celebrated 40 years on air on November 1st. - TVB International will begin a new 24 hour Chinese TV service to the US from December 1st. The new channel will use Galaxy 4 and be called Jade Channel Satellite Service. - TeleNoticias, a new channel run be TeleMundo, will begin broadcasting a 24 hour service of Spanish language news and information from early December.
