ppmquant -fs does bad job and gives strange patterns; use rlequant, djpeg, fbmquant instead. 'xv' uses ppmquant. test-ppmquant-fs --- a cropped image of the larger image processed with 'ppmquant -fs' test-djpeg-gif --- a cropped image of the larger image processed with 'djpeg -gif' Both test images contains at maximum 256 colors and therefore you're able to look at them with 8 bit display without using any quantizer again.
