Your Netscape instant messaging client lets you send and receive both AIM and ICQ messages. To send and receive ICQ messages, you have to be logged on to ICQ; you can't use AIM and ICQ simultaneously. You must have an ICQ account, and you need to put together an ICQ contact list. Some AIM buddies may have ICQ accounts and can therefore be ICQ contacts, but it isn't automatic.

You can login to ICQ manually every time you want to use the service, or you can set ICQ to launch when you launch Netscape or when you start your computer.

You login to ICQ using the following procedure:
If you select the Connect at Launch checkbox, you are automatically logged on to ICQ on all subsequent occasions when you start Netscape. This time, you will need to connect manually.
Note: When you login to ICQ, the Login button changes to the Disconnect button . Click this button to disconnect.
The window changes to show the Online Mode tab with a list of all your ICQ contacts who are currently online. If they are not online, they don't appear. If a contact is online, you can send an ICQ message to him or her.

On Windows computers, you can set ICQ to launch automatically when your computer starts up, without launching the Netscape browser itself. You can't, however, set this option from within ICQ; you must be logged on to AOL Instant Messenger for Netscape. You should be in the main ICQ/AIM window, which you can select from the Window menu, rather than in the My Sidebar version.
ICQ will now open on all subsequent occasions when you start your computer. Although this option opens the ICQ window, it doesn't automatically log you on unless you've also selected "Connect at launch" in the ICQ window.
Note: Launching at system startup is available only on Windows computers. In addition, this option won't be available if you have previously set either the standalone AOL Instant Messenger client or the standalone ICQ client to start at system launch.

Add ICQ contacts using the following procedure:
A contact can only be added to one group.
An authorization request message is automatically sent out if the user requires this safeguard. Until the proposed contact responds to this message, his or her display name appears in a folder called "Awaiting Authorization." If the contact responds positively, he or she is added to your contact list. If the contact responds negatively, his or her name remains in the "Awaiting Authorization" folder. No message is sent out if the proposed contact doesn't require authorization. His or her display name appears in your Contact List immediately.

Receiving ICQ messages is the same as receiving AIM messages, except that you must be logged on to the service. The ICQ service has no ability to receive messages when you're offline. When an incoming message arrives, a message window opens displaying the content you have been sent. You respond using the following procedure:

If you access the Internet through an Internet service provider, you most likely will not need to make any changes to the Connection preferences dialog box. If you access the Internet through a local area network firewall (for example, at your workplace), then your network administrator may need to supply information so that you can configure the proxy section of the Connection preferences panel.
Server Host
This field contains the default Internet address of the Netscape integrated instant messaging server, which supports both AOL Instant Messenger for Netscape and ICQ for Netscape. Under normal circumstances, you do not need to change this field. If your proxy server needs to resolve the host name, you may need to type the IP address instead of the name of the server in this field. You can obtain the IP address from your network administrator.
Server Port
This field contains the default server port number to be used on the Netscape integrated instant messaging server. Under normal circumstances, you do not need to change this field.
Connect using proxy
If you click this button, the Instant Messenger software activates the proxy server controls. Enter the appropriate proxy server, authentication, and protocol information after obtaining it from your network administrator.
